Bootlegger's Hill Vineyard

Growing Season: Following two drought years, Spring rains mercifully filled the soil profile with water at budbreak. Both drought and cold Spring nights likely contributed to a light crop at harvest. Summer was ideal; warm and dry. A heat spike in the second week of September accelerated grape maturity and harvest occurred about two weeks earlier than typical.

Goldridge soil: Fine, sandy loam from fractured sandstone from ancient seabed. Nutrient-poor.

Clones: Pommard, 667, Elite, Wädenswil (co-fermented)

Harvested: September 7, 2022: 25.1 brix. 3.41 pH. 6.5 g/L titratable acidity.

2023 Calligraphy Chardonnay
Richard Dinner Vineyard

Growing Season: A wet winter and spring recharged the soils, while a cool spring and summer slowed ripening, preserving acidity. A mild, dry fall allowed extended hang-time and full flavor development. Harvest was about two weeks late. 2023 is considered an exceptional vintage for Sonoma Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Soils: Volcanic ash, brown loam, and tuft—low fertility with excellent drainage.

Clone: Old Wente

Harvested: October 10 | 22.5 Brix | 3.40 pH | 6.8 g/L TA

Tasting Notes: A modern take on classic California Chardonnay. Bright gold with aromas of lemon meringue, jasmine, and baking spices. Flavors of poached pear, candied ginger, and vanilla custard, wrapped in elegant French oak. Rich yet balanced, with a chalky-mineral finish that keeps you coming back.
